Curiosity Rover SOL 2454 Manipulation?

It is no secret that the Mars Curiosity Rover is getting older and older as it keeps on turning and burning while sending back images of the Martian Surface. I haven’t noticed anything to cool recently while looking over the Mars Images app until I saw Neville Thompson’s Gigapan of the SOL 2454 from two days back. Sitting there was a crazy looking statue piece or something along those lines. It was the first time in a while I wanted to check out a new image. As with most current and previous space missions that utilize the data transfer between a Rover or Spacecraft back and forth to Earth via the Deep Space Network the NASA/Caltech entity Jet Propulsion Laboratory or JPL for short handles all of the imaging bandwidth.

When I popped it into the Photoshop after downloading the “so-called RAW Image” from the NASA website when in fact it is just a 70% detailed JPEG file of the real raw image I noticed that those blur blocks were back. As well as a LOT of color jumble. I decided to make a quick video to show you some of the artifacts as well as some of the blurring done. I have often talked about how it would most likely not be a person blurring these images like in the Apollo days but it most likely the manipulation would be done via a script written in a way that takes care of the files and clusters them with the color artifacts, lines, and blurry square boxes all over the place. This takes place either when converted from the RAW to the 70 percent version of the image or when the jpeg is saved and made available to the public via the Curiosity Rover website. I do not see people who take government money paying people anymore for something that can be done automatically.

So why all of this Manipulation? This is where the PDS public policy comes into play. Even though the space agencies, as well as JPL and CalTech, are funded through taxes those people like myself who pay those taxes have to wait six to nine months later until they are they available for me to download. If you have seen my videos with the processed .IMG file versus the .JPEG on the NASA website then you have seen the difference between the two.

Six to nine months! Absurd. Why is this? Why do they get the first dibs on the images? This is supposed because it allows the scientists that worked on various instruments and parts of the rover have first shot at seeing the real images and then a jump on “science journals”. I don’t buy it. I believe it is kept from us that long so they can never “Go Back” to confirm things that are seen in the lower scale images. A lot of amazing finds have been found over the years!

It is nice to be back making some videos again! I will be working on some “Best of” videos showcasing some of the older videos but this time in a new light. In the light of the PDS real raw file high definition! Some of those finds from myself and various anomaly hunters need to be looked back over. Especially all of the amazing emails and comments that pointed out so much I had missed the first time around!
