check Apollo 16: House Rock

Apollo 16: House Rock was created by Todd
I thought I'd start a thread on House Rock, since we don't have one going and in my opinion, it's one of the most astounding discoveries in all the Apollo EVAs. Unfortunately, the relevant surface Hasselblad 70mm color film reel, "Magazine 116/E" has stains running down the entire reel. I can't find anything online about the specific cause, but as someone who is very familiar with film and film processing, I'd say it was a fixer / rinse issue or something liquid got in the camera itself and it started to prematurely process the film. Whatever the cause, every version of 166/E I've seen, has junk running down it.
House Rock itself appears to be a giant hollow boulder with "porthole" features. The color 70mm surface pictures of House Rock are AS16-116-18603 and AS16-116-18604. Below I processed full size versions from the NASA/JSC/Arizona State University raw TIF scan.

The best way to see House Rock is in the ironically titled NASA educational film, "Nothing So Hidden." The EVA 3 House Rock exploration happens around the 21:16 mark.

AS16-106-17336 is a black and white 70mm picture of Charles Duke with House Rock in the background. Keith Laney has a version at his site on the "Apollo Digs #2 " page. I think it's probably the best version I've seen online.

Iv'e put the mosaic together - and tried to enhance - lighting is so difficult to work with on the moon - Keith's Image is stunning - loads of detail.

I might have to play with the original frame, as my work PC is more 'pants' than the crud at home! ....

Yeah, that Apollo stuff is bright and full of contrast. It's a challenge getting detail to come out in the highlights, but the info is usually there, especially on the ASU scans.

Thanks Todd, I'll have a little bit of an experiment with smaller images see how's best to pull out some of the detail before I make any more mosaics ;) Nice one

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by the YouTube channel and to all of our admins and forum users here on the channel.   They really have kept the website current while I have been busy taking care of things in my personal life.   I promised that the next video would be a long one and have a LOT to look at.  You can get lost in these Gigapans and I really hope that you do!  I spent a lot of time stitching these together and making sure that they were the best quality that I could get them.  SOL 1448 really has been a goldmine for anomaly hunters and those people who are just hobbiest.  I really hope you enjoy this one and expect much more to come from the latest batches of images!
