Vista from Curiosity Shows Cross bedded Martian Sandstone
9.11.2015
Large-scale cross bedding in the sandstone of this ridge on a lower slope of Mars' Mount Sharp is common in petrified sand dunes.
The scene combines multiple images taken with both cameras of the Mast Camera (Mastcam) on Curiosity on Aug. 27, 2015, during the 1,087th Martian day, or sol of the rover's work on Mars. It spans from east, at left, to south-southwest. Figure 1 includes a scale bar of 200 centimeters (about 6.6 feet).

They have 723 mastcam images so far for sol 1087, so it was a monster. At first I thought your anomaly was a small crevasse, but after taking a closer look, there's something else going on there, they look like two different pieces barely still attached by a piece of internal structure, maybe something like a reinforcement bar. I processed the image from the PDS raw DRCL .img file.

Check out this section from the same site ( site 49/1798 ) taken on sol 1087 that was not included in PIA19818 , it's the area I find most interesting. These were also processed from the PDS raw DRCL .img files.

I was familiar with the formation in the zoom image as a whole, but looking through the individual mastcam images over the last few days, I realized I was not familiar with a lot of them and they are just outstanding.B) A few examples below processed from the PDS raw DRCL .img files.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by the YouTube channel and to all of our admins and forum users here on the channel.   They really have kept the website current while I have been busy taking care of things in my personal life.   I promised that the next video would be a long one and have a LOT to look at.  You can get lost in these Gigapans and I really hope that you do!  I spent a lot of time stitching these together and making sure that they were the best quality that I could get them.  SOL 1448 really has been a goldmine for anomaly hunters and those people who are just hobbiest.  I really hope you enjoy this one and expect much more to come from the latest batches of images!
