file Going back to SOL 1387 - The "Safe-Mode"-Saga (by Will Farrar)

7 years 7 months ago - 7 years 7 months ago #8298 by Joe Hartung
When SOL 1387 was a recent one, Will published his great video "The Curiosity Rover "Safe Mode" Saga?" on

It´s one of many really great videos on WUITS.

Remembering the "bottle"-statue-like shape on

mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/01387/mcam/1387MR0068150080701911E01_DXXX.jpg

one has to realize, that in this image the statue-shape is definitely standing on a rectangular platform.

BUT: When the following images on this object were published by NASA, like

mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl-raw-images/msss/01419/mcam/1419MR0069990000702354E01_DXXX.jpg

you can realize that the rectangular platform is not there anymore. And this makes me more to ask, if some NASA-Images, esp. this one, just are fake-images ?.

I don't really notice any discrepancies with the visual aspects of the formation in the different images, outside of it being an amazing piece.B) I think the image perspective changes are based on the rover's movement and orientation to the formation.

I tend to be skeptical I suppose, but in watching the entire video I really didn't see anything unusual except the "letters" on the wall. But why would someone on Mars millions of years ago use Latin alphabetic characters? I'm afraid it's just cracks or discolorations on the rocks that we notice because we're looking for familiar things.

Thanks for your Answers, Todd and "Rocket Dwag".

This time I did not enclose images with remarks about what´s remarkable in my eyes. Here it comes.

Following the "statue"-image from SOL 1387, showing the platform that I see here. I took the image from the PDS-Files and enlarged it a little bit with Photoshop-Elements 10.

And here the following image from SOL 1419 where the platform is not to see.

My Topic to Will´s Video was about the platform, not about the "letters". And so far I can not agree that the "vanished" platform on the SOL 1419-image is just caused by the changed perspective. From my point of view a clearly rightangular platform can not "go away" by such reason. This is especially because both images were made when the rover stood in front of, but not behind the "statue". The different distance in both images also can not "erase" the platform. On the contrary: The "platform" should be bigger on SOL 1419.

Here once again the image sources from NASA - JPL:

I think while the rover is moving closer, it is also moving around the formation, making the cliff perspective appear to recede.

Thank you to everyone who has stuck by the YouTube channel and to all of our admins and forum users here on the channel.   They really have kept the website current while I have been busy taking care of things in my personal life.   I promised that the next video would be a long one and have a LOT to look at.  You can get lost in these Gigapans and I really hope that you do!  I spent a lot of time stitching these together and making sure that they were the best quality that I could get them.  SOL 1448 really has been a goldmine for anomaly hunters and those people who are just hobbiest.  I really hope you enjoy this one and expect much more to come from the latest batches of images!
